Young Male Orangutan

Young Male Orangutan
Sumatra, 1991
I’ve spent a lot of time hanging from ropes in the forest, with limited success. In this case, I put a rope next to fruiting fig tree. It was very uncomfortable the week that I hung there, eight hours each day.

This image is of a young sub-adult male that the researchers called “Mr. X,” fleeing the dominant male after he has stolen not only fruit from the tree, but sex from one of the area’s females.
